OBJECTIVE: to explore the potential of improved maize varieties for hydroponic green fodder production. METHOD: the growth, biomass production, and nutritional content of five improved maize varieties developed by the Guatemalan Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ICTA) were compared. The evaluated varieties were HB83; HB18, B7, B9, and B15. A completely random design was used, with five treatments and ten replicates. Each treatment corresponded to each maize variety. The experimental unit was a 15 X 20 cm polystyrene germination tray. The experimental period lasted 18 days. RESULTS: mean biomass productions per tray were: HB18 =184.2 g ± 10.3; HB83 = 177.7 g ± 22.4; B15 = 175.4 g ± 16.6; B9 = 169.94 g ± 19.8 y B7 = 161.46 g ± 16.94. No significant differences in biomass production were observed, except between varieties HB18 and B7 (p = .036). CONCLUSION: HB18 was the most promising variety for feeding ruminants and other herbivores because it showed the highest value of average biomass production, the second highest value of protein content, and the highest value of crude fiber by 18 days post sowing.
