Abstract

OBJECTIVE: estimate the risk of death from COVID-19 in overweight or obese patients at the Parque de la Industria Temporal Hospital, Guatemala City. METHOD: the study is a retrospective cohort study. 45 records of patients without overweight or obesity and 45 with overweight or obesity, with a diagnosis of COVID-19, were consecutively selected between November 15 and December 14, 2020 through intentional non-probabilistic sampling due to availability. RESULTS: the characteristics of a cohort of 90 patients were observed, comparing those who died (n=60) with the total number of patients. The reported mortality was 66.66%, with 48.33% of the deceased being underweight or normal weight and 51.66% being overweight or obese. Through a logistic regression, it was found that as adjusted risk factors for mortality stratified by overweight and obesity, being male is a significant risk factor for mortality, with a relative risk of 4.47 (95% CI 1.16-17.27). Furthermore, levels greater than 300 ng/mL of ferritin showed a strong association with the risk of mortality, with a relative risk of 9.09 (95% CI 1.82-45.4). CONCLUSION: being male and having high levels of ferritin are significant risk factors for mortality in patients admitted for COVID-19 at the Parque de la Industria Hospital during November 2020.
