OBJECTIVE: describe the relationship between breastfeeding and bronchial asthma in children under eight years of age who attend the Pediatric Department of the Hospital General San Juan de Dios. METHODOLOGY: a cross-sectional descriptive study, describing the respiratory symptoms and exacerbation of asthma in patients exclusively breastfed (n=54) and artificially fed (n=22). The relationship between the degree of severity and the type of breastfeeding received was explored. RESULTS: the group that received exclusive breastfeeding, 43% (23) were between the ages of five and seven years and 54% (29) were female; in the group that received artificial feeding, 50% (11) were between two and four years old and 59% (13) were female. Among the respiratory symptoms evaluated, both cough and bronchial congestion, in both groups it occurs in nine out of ten children, wheezing and dyspnea was higher in the group with artificial feeding, 68% (15) and 27% (6 ) respectively; 13.6% (3) of the minors with formula feeding reported three asthma attacks in the last week. In both groups, six out of 10 children presented a higher degree of severity. Regarding the relationship between breastfeeding and the degree of severity, no association was found, even so, exclusive breastfeeding did prove to be a protective factor (OR 1.071). CONCLUSIONS: Children who receive exclusive breastfeeding present less severity in terms of their respiratory symptoms during acute exacerbations of the disease.
