OBJECTIVE: to analyze the factors that influence women’s participation in governmental oversight, in order to identify structural, cultural, and professional barriers that limit their equitable participation, and to propose strategies to promote their empowerment in this sector. METHOD: a bibliographic review was conducted, consulting academic articles, official reports, and previous research. Priority was given to sources offering a critical and up-to-date perspective. RESULTS: the literature review identified several factors that affect women’s participation in governmental oversight, including gender barriers, stereotypes, lack of opportunities, and challenges in balancing personal and professional life. It was observed that, despite normative progress in gender equity, significant gaps persist in access to leadership positions and in the distribution of responsibilities within the oversight field. CONCLUSION: this study provided a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing the participation and professional development of women in governmental oversight. The findings may be useful for designing strategies and public policies that promote gender equity in this area and ensure equal opportunities for women. Furthermore, it highlights the need to implement awareness and mentoring programs aimed at reducing gender bias and fostering a more inclusive and equitable work environment.
