OBJECTIVE: this study aims to assess the potential for integrating ultrasound (US) training into the curriculum for sixth-year medical students at the Facultad de Ciencias Medicas, Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC). METHODOLOGY: the research involved a comprehensive review and analysis of existing literature on the topic of ultrasound education in medical schools. RESULTS: the findings suggested a significant need for introducing a radiology course at the Facultad de Ciencias Medicas. Several studies highlight the growing importance of ultrasound in undergraduate medical education, referring to it as “the new stethoscope” of the 21st century. However, there are two primary challenges for implementing ultrasound training: the lack of equipment and the absence of a basic ultrasound course in the curriculum. Although, utilizing ultrasound for diagnostic purposes may require more training time than available in a medical student’s schedule, there is potential for focused training, particularly in obstetrics, which would be beneficial in rural settings. CONCLUSIONS: despite the current obstacles, it’s feasible to include ultrasound training in the medical curriculum at USAC. By incorporating a basic ultrasound course into the competencies expected of final-year medical students, USAC can take the first step toward embracing this valuable tool in medical education.
