OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of repairing or replacing failed distribution transformers using the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) approach, with the aim of optimizing operational decision-making in power distribution companies. METHODOLOGY: The Technical-Economic Evaluation Algorithm was applied to a set of 156 failed transformers. For each case, investment costs and capitalized losses were calculated for both repair and replacement alternatives, based on operational data and regulatory guidelines (NT-CRE-06). RESULTS: In a representative case, the TCO was USD 4,447 for the repaired unit and USD 3,838 for a new one, showing a cost advantage of USD 608.83 in favor of replacement. Of the 156 units analyzed, only 19 repairs were economically justified; the remaining 137 represented a potential inefficiency equivalent to USD 81,974. CONCLUSIONS: The algorithm enables more efficient and sustainable decision-making by prioritizing equipment with lower energy losses. This not only reduces operating costs but also mitigates the carbon footprint—particularly relevant in power systems largely dependent on natural gas. Institutional adoption of this approach is recommended, as national regulations do not restrict its use, making it a valuable tool for improving the technical and economic management of transformer assets.
