OBJECTIVE: to characterize the use of medicinal plants to treat symptoms of COVID-19, in the department of Guatemala. METHOD: the research was descriptive, quantitative and transversal. Carried out through an electronic Google forms questionnaire, with 12 multiple choice questions to 385 people. RESULTS: 72.4% of the people who answered the electronic questionnaire used medicinal plants to treat the COVID-19 disease, of which the majority were female. The most used medicinal plants were ginger (91%), lemon (81%), eucalyptus (60%), garlic (51%) and red onion (48%). In addition, those who turned to medicinal plants reported perceiving that their COVID-19 symptoms improved. The results of the Chi square test show a significant relationship between sex and the use of medicinal plants (Chi2 = 9.34, p value = 0.002). This suggests that the use of medicinal plants is associated with sex. CONCLUSION: at least 72% of people who have suffered from COVID-19 in the department of Guatemala used medicinal plants to treat the disease and the most frequently used plants were ginger, lemon, eucalyptus, garlic and onion dwelling.
