Focus and scope

The University of San Carlos de Guatemala has the constitutional mandate to promote research in all spheres of human knowledge and to cooperate in the study and solution of national problems.

In compliance with the aforementioned constitutional mandate, the Postgraduate Studies System (SEP) has been implementing a series of strategies aimed at promoting research in all current graduate programs in the academic units that make up the System throughout the country.

In order to support the dissemination of the scientific production of students and teachers of the different graduate programs of the University throughout the country, the SEP has decided to create its own scientific journal, through which it hopes to strengthen the links between universities. and society, as well as providing scientific knowledge to those who have the responsibility of designing policies, programs, projects and actions of national and local scope, so that they can carry it out, based on scientific evidence, that is, based on scientific knowledge of reality. , in its multiple dimensions and expressions.

Science is an inescapable tool for the construction of scientifically valid and socially useful knowledge, in this sense the SEP journal also aims to contribute to the solution of national problems, through the study, analysis, discussion and publication of the different research oriented to respond to the needs and problems of Guatemalan society.

Peer review process

The work sent by the authors will be submitted to a first review by the editor of the journal. Authors should send complementary files (databases, etc.) to verify the authenticity of the results reflected in the manuscript. The originality of the article will be evaluated and that it follows the criteria of the format, title and writing style of the rules of the APA seventh edition.

The work must follow the same logic and structure of the guide articles of the magazine.

The editor will ask to make the necessary corrections to improve the deficiencies found in the manuscript.

Once the deficiencies are overcome, the article will be reviewed by an external evaluator specialized in the article's area of ​​competence. Said evaluator will do a thorough review using a previously established evaluation format.

The external evaluator will ask the author or authors of the work to make the necessary corrections to improve the deficiencies found in the work.

The review process will end when the external evaluator issues a final opinion to endorse the publication of the work.

Open access policy

The Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System adheres to the different initiatives that promote free access to knowledge. Therefore, all the contents of the journal are freely accessible and are published under a Creative-Commons license of the Attribution 4.0 International type.

Digital Archiving and Preservation Policy

The Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala allows the self-archiving of accepted and published manuscripts. Authors retain ownership of the copyright and can archive pre-published or post-published versions or pdf versions of the editorial body in personal or institutional repositories or libraries whenever they wish without the express permission of the journal or publishing body.

Authors of articles published in the Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System have the right to deposit the accepted or published versions of the manuscripts in institutional repositories. The authors can make them publicly available immediately once the Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System is mentioned as the site where they were originally published.

The Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System participates in the digital preservation of the Public Knowledge Project Private LOCKSS Network (PKP PLN) that allows long-term digital preservation in the event that the journal is no longer online. The LOCKSS program enables decentralized and distributed preservation of long-term access to manuscripts. Likewise, it also allows the digital preservation of the authentic versions of the manuscripts.

Plagiarism detection and originality report

All papers will be reviewed through Turnitin to detect whether they have been plagiarized or not and an originality report of the work will be sent to the authors.

The authors undertake to reduce the similarity index of their work to less than 25%.

Manuscript Review Charges (Article Processing Charges or APCs)

All manuscripts sent to the journal are exempt from any charge for their revision or publication.

Rejection of shipments

If the manuscript does not meet the minimum requirements set out in the checklist for the preparation of submissions, the author or authors will first be notified of the reasons for rejection. According to the journal's metrics, the rejection rate is calculated based on the following formula:

Ethical statement on publication and malpractices

The publication of articles in the refereed journal Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System, constitutes a process of permanent knowledge production. The journal promotes the publication of open access digital articles. In addition, it considers that it is its duty to ensure the transmission of scientific knowledge, guaranteeing its rigor and quality, under an ethical commitment to the scientific and academic community. The protocols and guidelines described here are good practices in common practice in prestigious international publishers. In this line, the Code of Conduct that has been established by the Publications Ethics Committee (COPE) for editors of scientific journals is taken as a reference.


Obligations and responsibilities
The Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System undertakes to:
• ensure the quality of the scientific material it publishes
• ensure freedom of expression
• maintain the academic integrity of its content, ensuring that the material it publishes conforms to internationally accepted ethical standards.
• be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when necessary.


Authors' obligations
Authors must guarantee the authorship of the documents they present. Authorship corresponds to those who have made a significant contribution to the work. If the work has significant contributions from more than one author, they must appear as co-authors.
Authors should provide contact details to facilitate communication with other researchers regarding the published work. These data will be disseminated together with it.


Originality and plagiarism
Authors must guarantee that they have the rights that they present in their work, as well as that they have made use of the right to cite the work of other authors.
Those originals in which plagiarism is detected will be rejected. Likewise, an author should not submit originals that essentially describe the same work that he has already published in another work.


Peer review process
The decisions of the members of the editorial committee to accept or reject a document for publication are based solely on the relevance of the work, its originality and clarity, as well as the relevance of the study in relation to the editorial line.
It is guaranteed that the material submitted for publication will be considered as reserved and confidential matter while it is being evaluated and, in the case of being rejected, no evaluating member may make the original public.
The identity of the evaluators is protected at all times, guaranteeing their anonymity.

Claims
The Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System undertakes to respond quickly to the complaints received. In any case, if the interested parties are unable to satisfy their claims, it is considered that they have the right to raise their protests to other instances.


Protection of individual data
The Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System guarantees the confidentiality of individual information. It is the ultimate responsibility of the authors to have the relevant authorizations for the use of the images and trademarks that appear in their works, as well as other personal data (age, sex, social level, etc.).


Tracking bad practices
The Scientific Journal of the Postgraduate Studies System assumes its obligation to act accordingly in case of suspicion of bad practices or inappropriate behavior. Manuscripts that raise questions about possible misconduct will be rejected.
All reasonable efforts will be made to ensure that the work submitted for evaluation is rigorous and ethically appropriate.


Integrity and academic rigor
Any time a published work is known to contain material inaccuracies, misleading or distorted statements, it should be corrected immediately.
If any work whose content is fraudulent is detected, it will be removed as soon as it is known, immediately informing both readers and indexing systems.
